TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Savannah College of Art and Design

Professor of Media and Performing Arts ­ Fall 2001 to Spring 2002

  • Head of directing program.
  • Taught directing classes on both the graduate and undergraduate level. 
  • Directed and produced mainstage productions.
  • Developed and led a graduate acting seminar on creating one-person shows from initial concept through writing, producing, acting and directing.
  • Developed and led a graduate acting seminar on the place of ritual in both theatre and everyday life; explored existing rituals from the mundane to the sacred; created original ritual behavior for the exploration of ritual’s function in a variety of social contexts; applied discoveries to a variety of theatre and acting styles.
  • Taught graduate-level theatre criticism course utilizing a two-track approach:  practical critique-writing of current theatre and film, as well as in-depth study of historical critical texts and their application to relevant plays from the Ancient Greeks through the Neo-Classicists.
  • Advised the development of an original one-act play for competition at the American College Theatre Festival.
  • Directed a multi-media project utilizing film, video and complex sound design with a live theatre component concerning Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in collaboration with a student in fulfillment of their senior thesis.

Visiting Professor of Media and Performing Arts ­ Fall 1997

  • First professor of newly created Media and Performing Arts minor.
  • Developed courses in acting, text analysis, and theatre appreciation for undergraduate non-majors.
  • Produced and directed a multi-media workshop production of The Tempest in collaboration with the Film and Video department utilizing multi-media components.

Purdue University

Graduate Instructor in Directing ­ 1995 to 1996

  • Taught courses in fundamentals of stage directing for undergraduate theatre majors and non-majors.
  • Led beginning directors from their introduction to basic directing concepts through the realization of scenes produced for the public.

Director, Classroom Climate Workshop ­ 1995 to 1996

  • Created an interactive theatre workshop for incoming Teaching Assistants in Engineering and Science.
  • Used drama to raise awareness of techniques for improving gender equity in the classroom.
  • Funded by a Sloan Foundation grant, CCW was a joint project developed by the Purdue Women in Engineering and Women in Science organizations.
  • Co-wrote and directed theatrical components of workshop; developed improvisations for interactive teaching model.
  • Invited to participate in the Interactive Theatre Institute:  Human Relations Training in Engineering Education at Cornell University, May 1997.
  • CCW continues today as an institutionalized part of Teaching Assistant training at Purdue University.
